Cardiff University student dies after falling while climbing Ben Nevis

The man, who has not been named, fell in the Tower Gully area of the mountain in the highlands of Scotland.

Emergency services were called to the area at around 2.25pm on Sunday, and he was airlifted to the Belford Ford Hospital in Fort William.

A second man, believed to have been climbing with the student, was also rescued and taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Sergeant Michael Bell said there were no suspicious circumstances regarding the death.

“I would take the opportunity to thank the crew of the HM Coastguard helicopter and Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team for their assistance with this incident,” he said.

A Cardiff University spokesperson said: “We are aware of the tragic death of a Cardiff University student over the weekend.

“The next of kin have been notified and we continue to liaise closely with our Students’ Union colleagues. Our immediate thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends.”
