Captain Tom Moore congratulates Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds on baby news ‘Delighted!’

He said the wonderful news would be a boost to Britain as it battles through the coronavirus epidemic. Supping champagne during his afternoon with the Daily Express yesterday Captain Tom, who turns 100 today, said: “I am absolutely delighted for Boris and Carrie. The birth seemed to creep up on me very quickly but I am thrilled they now have had a healthy baby boy – it really has provided a shaft of light into all our lives at this time. Many congratulations to them both.”

The doorbell to Captain Tim’s home in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire, was red hot yesterday as hundreds of presents were delivered in time for his big day.

Among them were three crates of Timothy Taylor’s Landlord beer, whose headquarters is in Captain Tom’s birthplace of Keighley, West Yorkshire.

The Second World War veteran was also given champagne, chocolates and stuffed toys in his image.

But his favourite remains a personal letter from his heroine, Dame Vera Lynn.

Captain Tom’s daughter Hannah said: “We have received some beautiful, personalised and heartfelt gifts that people have clearly put all their love and energy into – and these will never leave us, they will stay in the family forever.”
