Canadian living in UK baffled by common greeting has social media in stitches

A Canadian living in the UK has revealed she was baffled by a common greeting when she first moved to the country.

Samantha Devine, who moved to Nottingham after her partner Tyler Welsh began playing for the city’s Panthers hockey team, said she thought people were “implying something was wrong” when greeting her by saying “alright”.

She said it was one of the first things she noticed when moving to the UK, adding that she was still not sure how to respond.

Ms Devine shared her confusion on TikTok, explaining that she was worried when she first heard the phrase.

She said in the post: “When me and Tyler first heard this, we thought they were literally asking us if we were okay – like, as if implying something was wrong.

“In Canada, if someone asks you if you’re alright, you’d definitely take them literally and I probably think that I must look sick or something.”

Ms Devine says she has tried to respond by striking up conversation but says this has only resulted in her getting funny looks.

She added: “At home when you see someone, you’d usually ask them ‘how are you doing?’ and then you’d answer ‘I’m good thanks, how about you?’.

“But when I responded with that here, I’ve just got some funny looks, so if you’re a local please let me know in the comments what the proper response is.”

She was then further confused when one of her followers told her the correct response was “yeah alright ta, you?” to which she responded “what does the ta mean?”.

One fan of the Nottingham Panthers said Ms Devine should wait until she hears the city’s “ayup duck” phrase, she replied by saying she had not heard it but wanted to.

And another TikTok user joked: “The answer is always ‘Yeah, good, how are you?’, even if you are literally dying.”
