Every 10 years the census is issued, asking Britons from every single household to fill in specific information about their lives. The responses to the questions then help the Government make key decisions about planning and public services.
Britons should have now received a letter through their doors asking them to fill in details about their households and the people living there.
This letter contains an access code that enables you to answer the census questions online.
You can also request a code online if you’ve not received a letter, or request a paper census if you would prefer to fill it out this way.
The census letter details a date from which it should be filled in, but can you fill it in beforehand?

Can you complete the census before March 21?
According to the Government census website: “Every household should complete the census on Sunday 21 March 2021 or as soon as possible after.”
You can see the census questions and fill them in as soon as you have your access code if you wish.
However, you will need to make sure nothing has changed from the date you filled it in to March 21.
So if you’ve started a new job, moved home or had a new housemate move in before March 21, but have already filled in the census, you will need to contact the Government and let them know.
A note on the census website says: “If you’ve responded before March 21 and things have changed, you can let us know by calling us free.”

Who should fill in the census?
The census website states: “Everyone in England and Wales must complete a census or be included on a census for the place where they’re living or staying.”
Every householder at an address is responsible for completing a census questionnaire for their household.
The householder should either answer the individual questions for all household members or make sure each member answers their own.
You need to complete a census if you:
- live in private or rented accommodation
- are a student
- have a second home or empty property
- live somewhere that is mobile, such as a canal boat or motorhome
- live in a care home, armed forces base or similar establishment
- do not live at a fixed address
- live in a refuge
- are in witness protection
You are not responsible for filling in the census if you’re staying in the UK for less than three months.
The owner, accommodation manager or householder where you’re staying may ask you some questions so that they can fill in the census about the people staying there.
