‘Can NOT become PM’ Corbyn ATTACKED over Donald Trump protest – ‘inappropriate behaviour’
Reform Think Tank Director Charlotte Pickles took aim at Jeremy Corbyn for his behaviour towards Donald Trump during his state visit. Ms Pickles argued that he was behaving “inappropriately” and was showing that he could not be the leader of the United Kingdom because of his stance against the US President. The Reform Director also explained that as leader of the opposition Mr Corbyn had an obligation to show the country that he would be a good leader but was currently failing to convey that message.
She told BBC’s Politics live: “You can do both, you can represent your constituents and you can represent the interests of all citizens, not just those who might be Jeremy Corbyn supporters.
“But also, if you want to be the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom you have to behave in a way that is appropriate for that.
“And actually simply saying I’m not engaging with that person because I don’t like them which is essentially what Mr Corbyn said.
“Look Stella, I agree with you, Donald Trump is an abhorrent character and I don’t think he is befitting of the office of President in the United States.
“But nonetheless he is democratically elected as the President of the United States.
“And if Jeremy Corbyn can’t be part of this state visit process then he is not really showing to the country that he can be the future Prime Minister.”
During a joint-speech alongside Prime Minister Theresa May on Tuesday afternoon, US President Mr Trump claimed he had rejected an invitation to meet with the Labour Party leader.
He said: “I don’t know Jeremy Corbyn – never met him, never spoke to him. He wanted to meet today or tomorrow but I decided I would not do that.
“I think he is – from where I come from – somewhat a negative figure. People should look at how to do things correctly rather than criticise.
“I really don’t like critics as much as I like and respect people that get things done. So I’ve decided not to meet.”
Speaking at the anti-Trump rally, Mr Corbyn said: “In welcoming visitors from the United States, I hope there can be a conversation. I am absolutely not refusing to meet anybody, I want to be able to have that dialogue to bring out the better and more peaceful world that we all want to live in.”
Donald Trump’s state visit to the UK started with controversy on Monday, and before stepping off Air Force One, President Trump Tweeted a message directed at the London Mayor Sadiq Khan after tension between the two figures.
He wrote: “Sadiq Khan, who by all accounts has done a terrible job as mayor of London has been foolishly “nasty” to the visiting of the President of the United States by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom. He is a stone-cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me.”
