The Duchess of Cornwall made her first appearances as a future Queen consort on Tuesday. The Queen announced in her Platinum Jubilee message that it is her “sincere wish” for her daughter-in-law to be known as Queen Camilla when Prince Charles becomes King. Before Charles and Camilla married 17 years ago, it was announced that Camilla would become Princess Consort upon Charles ascending the throne.
This had previously been laid out in the FAQs section of the Prince of Wales’ website, but was quietly removed a few years ago — though The Telegraph reports several others were removed too.
Her Majesty’s letter signals the completion of Camilla’s turnaround from a once vilified mistress to one of the most senior members of the Royal Family.
She endured a difficult start to royal life, as she was blamed for Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage breakdown, and her relationship with the future king was the worst-kept royal secret in history.
Her first meeting with Prince William, according to unearthed accounts, was a difficult one.
The Irish Times reported in July 1998 that the pair met and spoke for the first time when a 16-year-old William unexpectedly dropped by St James’ Palace, where Charles lived at the time.
The report alleged that, after a 30-minute chat, Camilla declared: “I really need a gin and tonic.”
William reportedly refused to meet Camilla for some time after his mother’s tragic death in 1997.
Charles is believed to have respected this decision, and did not try to push anything. William and Camilla met a further two times before reports of their meeting were made public.
She met a young Prince Harry shortly after, and needn’t have worried what he thought.
Years later, he told royal author Angela Levin: “To be honest, she’s always been very close to me and William. She’s not a wicked stepmother.
“Look at the position she’s coming into. Don’t feel sorry for me and William, feel sorry for her.
“She’s a wonderful woman and she’s made our father very, very happy which is the most important thing. William and I love her to bits.”

Though Charles and Camilla went public with their relationship in the late Nineties, William and Harry were not seen in public with her until 2001.
While they put on a united front in public, there were reportedly still tensions behind the scenes, particularly between William and his father.
Robert Lacey, in his book Battle of Brothers, claimed Camilla was taken aback by William’s sometimes fiery temper.
He wrote: “Harry has freely confessed to his own blazing temper from time to time — and as for his elder brother he has proved no sweet William when roused.
“In the years after her 2005 marriage to Prince Charles, Camilla has recounted to her own family and close friends her surprise at discovering this unexpected side to Prince Charming — ‘the boy’s got a temper!’”
He added: “Charles’ wife had been horrified at the ranting and raving that on occasion William had unleashed against her husband in her presence.”
Fast forward 15 years or so, and William is especially pragmatic about the role Camilla plays in his father’s life and, in turn, the future of the monarchy. A source told the Daily Mail this weekend that William is “supportive” of the move to make his stepmother Queen Consort.
The source said that William “didn’t have the best relationship with his father” in the early stages of Charles and Camilla’s marriage.
But they added that times have changed: “He sees that Camilla has made his father happy and it is something he has come to terms with.
“His relationship with the Prince of Wales is better than it ever has been. He is not particularly close to his stepmother but they get on perfectly well and are quite the blended family now.
“He also respects his grandmother and her judgement more than anything in the world. If it is right for her, then it will be right for him.”
Harry, meanwhile, is yet to comment on the news. However, The Mirror reports that Charles personally called his youngest son to tell him of the Queen’s wish.
