Charles Villiers, 59, had checked into the Durrants Hotel in Marylebone, central London, where he was found dead by a housekeeper, it was reported.

The former racehorse owner, whose late mother was a cousin of Camilla, lost the latest round of a bitter split from wife Emma in June but a final settlement had not yet been agreed.

Sources say Mr Villiers, who was said to have been declared bankrupt, hanged himself. They filed for divorce in 2014 and the case was then heard in five different courts in front of 20 judges.

Mr Villiers, from Tyninghame, East Lothian, wanted the case heard in Scotland, where the couple lived for over 20 years. But his ex-wife won the right to have it heard in England.

Her husband accused her of bigamy and fraud, which a police investigation dismissed, and she alleged he was a dishonest bully.

A court heard both of them had been “financially ruined” and “psychologically damaged” by the drawn-out proceedings. And earlier this year, Mr Justice Mostyn, sitting in the Family Division of London’s High Court, ruled Mr Villiers could not afford to pay the £3.5million that Emma, 62, was seeking.

There are reports he had been sleeping on friends’ sofas. A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: “At this time the man’s death is being treated as unexpected. It has been investigated and is not suspicious.”
