King Charles III has previously been an amateur jockey and has trained a number of his own thoroughbreds with Camilla at tracks such as Cheltenham and Ascot. The King has inherited the Sandringham stud and the racing colours of the monarch which is a purple body with a gold braid, red sleeves, and a velvet black riding cap with a gold trim.

Despite this, there is a “clear plan” for Camilla to take over as the royal figurehead due to her passion for the sport.

Camilla’s role will see her handle relationships with trainers following the Queen’s most successful season last year with total winnings of £584,000.

The Queen’s bloodstock advisor John Warren was incredibly close to the Queen and they spent her final weekend together.

He said of Charles: “He has always followed it, but it has been his mother’s interest so it has been at arm’s length.

“He owns a few horses himself, in particular with the Duchess of Cornwall.

“She is absolutely besotted by racing.”

A senior racing source told The Mail on Sunday: “I think now it will be Camilla – she will be the figurehead.

“The plan has always been that Charles and Camilla would take on the legacy.

“Camilla obviously adores horses and is hugely passionate about racing. She really loves it, particularly Cheltenham – the jumps.

“I think there’s a pretty clear plan, given the Queen’s passion and love for racehorses.”

The King’s horseracing reign has begun successfully on Thursday with his horse Educator, who was bred by the Queen, winning second place at Salisbury in a four-horse handicap race.

Though Camilla is thought to take control of the royal stables, the King will likely scale back the number of horses due to the £1million a year loss.

It is thought the royal stables contain 50 horses which cost approximately £1.5million per year.

A racing source told The Times: “Camilla has a real love of racing, and she will be the person who speaks with the trainers each in the way the Queen had.

“I don’t think the King will want to keep 40-50 horses with ten trainers.

“He will want to slim down the operation.”

The King will also inherit approximately 80 brood mares along with 24 racehorses and it is thought Princess Anne and Zara Tindall may want to pick a few horses to take off the King’s hands though their main interests are in eventing.

Other owners and breeders are reportedly interested in purchasing some of the Queen’s horses.

It is thought the King will ordered a formal review of the Royal Stud, thoroughbreds and breeding horses in the next few weeks.
