Camilla ‘styled as Duchess of Cornwall’ to avoid public backlash expert says
Prince Charles ‘took action’ to stop Camilla wedding says expert
The 73-year-old was once dubbed “the most hated woman in Britain” following the Prince Charles and Diana scandal. Her journey into the royal family was not the easiest but her popularity had risen since she married Prince Charles, 72, in 2005. This gave her the right to the royal titles Princess of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, but she opted for the latter.
Diana married Charles in 1981, and the royal title has been associated with her since.
Marlene Koenig, royal expert, said it was decided Camilla would not go by the title to ensure she would not suffer backlash.
She told Town and Country: “Camilla was not popular or well liked, [though] this has changed a lot since the marriage as Camilla has taken on a lot of patronages and Charles is a lot happier.
“Still, [there was] a lot of tension and anger among a certain element of the population—so it was decided that Camilla would be styled as the Duchess of Cornwall, even though, of course, she is the Princess of Wales.”

Last year saw the Duchess’ popularity take a hit following the release of season four of Netflix’s The Crown, which dramatises the love triangle between Charles, Diana and Camilla.
YouGov holds that 34 percent of those surveyed have a positive opinion of Camilla, making her the 11th most popular royal out of 15.
Following online harassment following the release of the new season, Clarence House’s Twitter restricted comments.
When Charles becomes king after Queen Elizabeth II, Camilla may also take on a unique title despite her rights as the Princes’ husband.
Buckingham Palace announced following their marriage the Duchess of Cornwall would become known as Princess Consort to Charles rather than Queen Consort.
References to the decision were removed from Clarence House’s website.
The residence, which serves as the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall’s office in London, has confirmed no changes had been made to the proposal in 2020.
Richard Fitzwilliams, royal expert, discussed the title following the airing of The Crown.
He told Express.co.uk: “The official line still is that she will be called Princess Consort.
“However since the last 20 episodes of The Crown are likely to concentrate on the 1990s with the War if the Waleses central to its plot, it is certainly probable that, temporarily anyway, it will be extremely damaging to the couple.
“The idea that Camilla could one day become Queen Consort is likely to be even less popular.”
