Camilla slammed by US public over new title ahead of King’s Coronation

King Charles and Camilla wave to crowds from balcony in Hamburg

King Charles’s wife Camilla has been slammed by members of the US public over her new “Queen” title.

The former Duchess of Cornwall will now officially be known as Queen Camilla, which was revealed for the first time on the invitation to the King’s Coronation.

The elaborately illustrated invitation, which was sent to around 2,000 guests, was signed by “King Charles III and Queen Camilla”.

The late Queen Elizabeth II handed Camilla the title of “Queen Consort”, which was not always guaranteed to her despite being married to the now-King for many years.

After getting the Queen’s blessing, Camilla was automatically granted the title when she died on September 8, 2022.

But now the recently revealed Coronation invitations appear to show that “Consort” has been dropped from the title.

A senior Palace source said: “It made sense to refer to Her Majesty as The Queen Consort in the early months of His Majesty’s reign, to distinguish from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

“‘Queen Camilla’ is the appropriate title to set against ‘King Charles’ on the invitation.

“The Coronation is an appropriate time to start using ‘Queen Camilla’ in an official capacity.”

But not all royal fans agree as a survey of 1,569 British adults showed that only 14 percent believed she should be named “Queen Camilla”, while 36 percent said she should keep the ‘Consort’ title.

Similarly, in the US, the title change caused some controversy among the American public.

On Twitter, one user wrote: “How fast you all forgot Queen Elizabeth whose desire was for her to be called Queen Consort. Camilla can get all the tiles she wants but she will never get the respect and love of the rest of the world. She always will be that other woman.”

Another said: “I’ve had just about enough of the ‘rebranding’ of Camilla. She is not a Queen, she has been given the title by her husband.”

Meanwhile, one asked: “How many of us (former colonials will not accept the title ‘Queen’ for Camilla?”

Commenting on the thread, one user seemed to agree, writing: “Well considering there is no title higher than Queen consort for a non-born royal.”

Another said changing Camilla’s title to ‘Queen’ will “do Charles’ reign damage” as many members of the public “loved Diana”.

Similarly, another user mentioned the late Princess Diana, saying the new title is like “slapping Princess Diana in the face”, and claimed: “She [Camilla] doesn’t deserve that title, especially the way she got it.”

Referring the Meghan Markle, the Sussex fan said: “Just saying if they get to call Camilla the title Queen, we get to call Meghan the title Princess. If good for one, good for all.

“Camilla wasn’t born a royal. Queen Elizabeth gave her the Queen Consort title. That’s the bottom line. Meghan is more deserving. #WeLoveYouMeghan.”
