Today the Duchess of Cornwall is due to attend a service at Westminster Abbey to mark Armistice Day. Camilla will place a custom-made cross at the Field of Remembrance to mark 103 years since the agreement to end fighting in World War 1 came into effect. She will represent the Royal Family at the event for the second year running, with the annual opening of the Field of Remembrance having previously been carried out by Prince Harry and Prince Philip.

The ceremony will see Camilla stand in front of the crosses from the Graves of the Unknown, where The Very Reverend David Hoyle, will offer prayers.

The Duchess will then lay her Cross of Remembrance before the ‘Last Post’ is played by a bugler and a two minute silence is observed.

On Tuesday, the Duchess, who is patron of The Poppy Factory, visited the charity’s facilities in Richmond-Upon-Thames, south-west London, and added a final poppy to the wreath Prince Charles will lay at the Cenotaph on Sunday.

Camilla has become a more central and appreciated figure in the Royal Family in recent years.

Despite having initially received scathing criticism for her perceived role in the breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage, recent polling by YouGov marks her currently as the tenth most popular member of the Firm.

The Duchess has worked hard to repair her reputation since her 2005 marriage to the Prince of Wales, by undertaking a number of charity endeavours.

However, royal expert Mr Fitzwilliams, claimed that Camilla will always be disliked by a section of the public due to Diana’s constant presence in the media cycle.

Mr Fitzwilliams said: “Here’s the problem ‒ that anything to do with Diana, which is constantly in the news, does bring back past memories.

“The past decades, and this brings back Diana, will mean obviously that there will always be a section of society that are far from enamoured with Camilla.

“That’s the way of the world”.

Camilla is thought to have first met Charles in the early seventies and the couple have since overcome adversity, with their relationship initially disapproved of in the Royal Family and among the public.

They both went on to marry other people; Camilla married Andrew Parker Bowles in 1973 and Charles married Diana in 1981, but neither were settled, happy relationships.

They redinkled their romance in 1986 while both still married.

In the Nineties, public opinion turned on Camilla after reports of her affair with Charles became public. 

In turn, the Duchess of Cornwall was given a frosty reception by swathes of the public when she married Charles in 2005.

However, Camilla has quietly gone about her business as future consort to Charles, and has been lauded for her charity work since joining the Firm.

The Duchess supports over 90 charities as patron or President, with her charitable work tending to focus on themes of sexual and domestic violence, literacy, animals and the arts.

Mr Fitzwilliams argued that the Duchess had become a “very valuable” member of the Royal Family. 

He said: “Issues such as reading, issues such as abuse, she’s done very well in quite a quiet way ‒ she’s persisting, beginning with osteoporosis.

“There is no question that she’s very valuable and [makes] a very valuable contribution. 

“But also of course, as an ideal partnership with the prince.”

Camilla talked to supporters of The Poppy Factory on Tuesday, who have been involved in funding refurbishments for the charity’s new facilities.

Since 1922, veterans with health conditions have been supported into employment by the Poppy Factory. 

The Duchess unveiled a stone plaque to commemorate the opening of the building. 

Chief Executive of The Poppy Factory Deirdre Mills said in a statement that it was: “A tremendous honour to welcome our Patron, Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall, twice in one week; firstly to Richmond and secondly to the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey.”
