At the time of her marriage to the Prince of Wales in 2005, it was made known Camilla Parker Bowles would take the title of Princess Consort rather than Queen Consort after her husband became King. But, following reports Prince Charles would like his wife to take the title, a royal expert has claimed the events following his crowning as King are bound to trigger a “good deal of debate”.

Camilla, 74, has chosen not to use the Princess of Wales title despite being married to the Prince of Wales.

It was made known the Duchess would not become queen at a time after earlier controversy surrounding her relationship with Charles.

Much time has passed since the future King admitted to having an affair while married to Princess Diana, but it is understood some – particularly older – Britons remain uncomfortable with the idea of ‘Queen Camilla’.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “There are those who still remember what happened in the past.”

Clarence House confirmed in 2020 that Camilla will not be titled Queen.

In a statement, it said: “The intention is for the Duchess to be known as Princess Consort when the Prince accedes to the throne.

“This was announced at the time of the marriage and there has been absolutely no change at all.”

Since this time, her approval rating – measured by YouGov – has reached a 10-year high.

The Duchess’s improved public opinion rating is likely to raise questions over which title will be most appropriate after Prince Charles becomes King.

Mr Fitzwilliams predicted: “I do think that when Charles succeeds the throne there will be a good deal of debate over the title that he gives Camilla.”

He added, however, that Camilla’s title was a totally “different matter” to whether the monarchy will continue to be popular under the leadership of Charles.

On this point, the royal expert said: “There is a world of difference between on the one hand finding fault with aspects of the monarchy [and on the other hand] actually wanting a republic.”

He added: “This is the thing to stress.”

Mr Fitzwilliams was responding to the idea of a referendum being held on the future of the monarchy.

Workers Party of Britain leader George Galloway last week declared he was “determined” to bring about such a vote in the UK.

In a recent episode of his talk show – “The Mother of all Talk Shows” – he added: “I will not support, without a fight, the idea that Prince Charles will succeed Her Majesty the Queen.”

Mr Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk there is no basis on which to hold such a vote.

He added: “There have been over 1,000 years of monarchy – there’s only been the Civil War and people were very anxious to get back to the monarchy after that.

“There’s no call for [a referendum].”
