Camilla and Charles may have to ‘stay’ at Highgrove says expert

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 73, officially became part of the Royal Family when she married Prince Charles, 72, on April 9, 2005. Since then the Duchess has grown into her royal role and been given a long line of royal titles and honours.

Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall’s official title explained

Camilla became the Duchess of Cornwall upon her marriage to Prince Charles.

Camilla’s official royal title is Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cornwall.

Technically she is entitled to be known as the Princess of Wales but chose not to use the title due to its lasting association with Charles’s first wife Princess Diana.

What title will Camilla take when Prince Charles is king?

Upon Prince Charles accession to the throne, Camilla will automatically become his Queen Consort.

However, it is understood that she will be known as Princess Consort instead, as announced by Clarence House at the time of her and Charles’s wedding.

Whether or not Camilla takes the title of Queen could hinge on public opinion as the title Princess Consort is meant to be a show of respect to the late Princess Diana.

“Princess Consort” mirrors the style of Queen Victoria’s husband Albert who was known as Prince Consort.

Camilla’s royal honours

Camilla has been given the following honours since joining the Royal Family:

October 2007: Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II

February 6, 2012: Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal
