The Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down as senior royals in 2020 before moving to the US, but returned to the UK recently and have remained in the country since the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Now, some people are calling for the couple to be brought back into the royal fold. 

Since returning to Harry’s home country, the pair have taken part in tributes to the former monarch alongside other members of the Royal Family. 

Meanwhile, King Charles III expressed his love for the couple in his first address to the nation as newly appointed King. 

He said: “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

While they are expected to return to the US after the 10-day mourning period, royal expert Kristen Meinzer said she hopes the new King will consider bringing them back into the Firm. 

She said: “I’m glad that Charles, in his first speech as King, took a moment to say he loved Harry and Meghan.

“And I hope Charles considers bringing them both back into the Firm the way they originally wanted: half in, half out, and earning their own salaries doing their own outside work.

“That would be in keeping with Charles’ own desire to streamline the monarchy while also having enough bodies to do all the engagements required of the Crown”.

She also said she hopes the rest of the family take inspiration from the Sussexes and discuss “difficult issues”. 

She told Newsweek: “I also hope that Charles and Wills continue to follow Harry and Meghan’s lead, talking about difficult issues like racism, misogyny, colonialism, and the plight of refugees -both of them mostly stayed quiet on these issues before Harry and Meghan opened the floodgates, and I think the world really wants them to continue evolving and speaking up”. 

But not everyone agrees as Margaret Thatcher’s former aide Nile Gardiner commented: “Absolutely not”. 

He took to Twitter, writing: “Absolutely not. Meghan’s vicious attacks on the Royal Family are an absolute disgrace, and she has no understanding of what Royal duty/service entails”.

One user, Sue Parkes agreed, commenting: “No way should they ever be brought back”.

Prince Harry and Meghan are expected to join other members of the Firm to take part in a historic reception at Buckingham Palace on Sunday, the night before the Queen’s state funeral. 

King Charles will be hosting the event and according to royal expert, Omid Scobie, Harry and Meghan are among those who have secured an invite to the reception.

Mr Scobie said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan, and more are also expected to spend some time at the Palace before Monday’s services.

It comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been spotted alongside other members of the Firm in recent days, since the passing of the late monarch, including meeting mourners outside Winsdor Castle.
