The burglar used a cordless drill and was spotted on CCTV trying to steal the £5million artwork. Two days after Banksy donated the piece the man was seen on CCTV by guards as he skulked around preparing to swoop on the creative endeavour that was gifted to the NHS. A source from the hospital told The Sun: “The man just walked in brandishing a cordless drill.

“Security spotted him and asked a supervisor if they should stop him.

“They were told to watch him and he was seen walking past the picture at least five times, clearly having a good look.

“Security stepped in and he was removed.”

A hospital spokesman told how the attempted theft had been foiled and that police were not called.

“Thanks for all you’re doing,” Banksy said in a note left with the piece. “I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white.”

Banksy left the artwork outside the hospital with a note for hospital workers reading: “Thanks for all you’re doing.

“I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if its only black and white.”

The renowned artist donated the painting titled “Game Changer” to Southampton General Hospital on May 6.

It depicts a boy dressed in dungarees playing with a nurse superhero toy.

Behind the boy there is a basket with figures of Batman and Spiderman in it.

The nurse figurine is wearing a cape, face mask, and a white apron featuring a red cross.

She has her arm raised as if she is flying.

When the pandemic ends the piece will be auctioned to raise money for NHS charities.

The Southhampton hospital previously paid tribute to members of staff Mike Brown, 61, and Katy Davis, 38, who both died after testing positive for Coronavirus.
