Bulb energy users baffled as smart meters switch language to Welsh in ‘rare’ glitch
People were left puzzled after their smart meters suddenly changed from English to Welsh, despite not living in Wales.
Bulb energy customers more than 100 miles away from the country were affected by the odd malfunction which caused the meters to switch.
The first indicator something was not quite right with the meters was when the “usage today” indicator changed to “defnydd heddiw”.
The company was forced to post a solution after receiving several complaints.
Customers were guided through five steps to fix the problem which explained the meanings of the Welsh buttons until eventually it could be reset back to English.
Bulb described the incident as a “rare” glitch, which has affected about one in 200 of the meters.
James Tombs, who lives in West Sussex, told the Money Saving Expert website: “I don’t live in Wales and don’t know Welsh.
“I went on to the Bulb forums, found others with the same problem and followed directions to change [the] language.
“It has been fine since.”
A Bulb spokesman has since responded to the malfunction.
“In some rare cases, in-home displays switch to Welsh,” he said.
“While we think it is a great language, we understand that in many cases people will want their display to be in English.
“Luckily the solution is just a few button presses away, and language settings can be changed in less than 10 seconds.”
