Buckingham Palace deny Queen fled London over coronavirus fears

The government’s plan to isolate all of the UK’s over-70s to protect them from coronavirus has left the Queen’s whereabouts in doubt.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock confirmed the measures are planned for the coming weeks and had not been implemented yet because the length of isolation would be ‘very long’.

Buckingham Palace has denied a report had the monarch left for Windsor Castle over virus fears on Thursday.

A ‘royal source’ was quoted in The Sun on Saturday saying she is in good health but ‘it was thought best to move her’, as lot of her staff are a ‘bit panicky over coronavirus’.

‘The Queen has met a lot of people there until recently,’ they added. ‘But she is weeks away from her 94th birthday and advisers believe it is best to get her out of harm’s way.

‘Buckingham Palace is in the middle of London and also has abigger staff than other estates so is deemed a much more dangerous location.’

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson told Metro.co.uk the trip was part of the Queen’s regular weekend residence at Windsor and that she is expected back at the palace this week as usual.

However, royal visits to Cheshire and Camden, north London, next week have been postponed ‘as a sensible precaution’.

Charles and Camilla recently postponed a spring tour ofBosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus and Jordan due to the pandemic.

It is also unclear how the couple, aged 71 and 72 respectively, would be affected by forced isolation measures.

Annual garden parties at the palace for more than 30,000guests in May and June are among many large-scale events to face the axe if theCovid-19 situation doesn’t improve.

Gatherings to celebrate the Queen’s 94th birthdayon April 21 and Prince Philip’s 99th, on June 10, may also have tobe toned down or cancelled.

Buckingham Palace has around 500 permanent staff, whileWindsor and Sandringham have fewer than 100 each.

There is no indication that anyone has tested positive forthe virus at any of the main royal residences.
