Boris Johnson has praised Prince Philip’s lifetime of royal achievements in his latest tribute. The Prime Minister gave a speech to the House of Commons days after it was announced that the Duke of Edinburgh had passed away. Mr Johnson lauded the 99-year-old royal, and added in small anecdotes about quips he had made about other countries, including Russia.

The Prime Minister said: “It is true that he occasionally drove a coach and horses through the finer points of diplomatic protocol.

“He coined a new word for the experience of putting your foot in your mouth.

“It is also true that amongst his more parliamentary expressions, he commented adversely on the French concept of breakfast.

“He told a British student in Papua New Guinea that he was lucky not to be eaten.”

He continued: “And he told the people of the Cayman Islands that they were descended from pirates.

“And that he would like to go to Russia, except that, as he put it, the ‘b******s murdered half my family’.

“The world did not hold it against him.

“On the contrary, they overwhelmingly understood that he was trying to break the ice.”

The funeral will take place at 3pm on Saturday April 17.

The service will be in St George’s Chapel and be preceded by a ceremonial procession inside the grounds of Windsor Castle.

It will begin with a National Minute’s Silence at three o’clock.
