Met Office forecasts ‘chilly’ weather with 'sunny spells'

Aidan McGivern, a metrologist with the metrological service, said that Saturday would see a sunny start for many across the country with some showers in East Anglia. However, Mr McGivern gave royal fans heading to London to see Her Majesty lying in state a stark warning about the chilly temperatures that will be expected tonight. 

He said: “So it will be a chilly start to the weekend, but it’s a sunny start for many away from the north of Scotland. 

“That is where there will be additional cloud and further showers from the word go. 

“One or two showers will continue to affect eastern parts of England, mostly East Anglia, but fewer compared with Friday. 

“For many, it is a dry and bright day with sunny spells and the temperature getting up into the mid-teens, fairly widely in perhaps the high teens in one or two spots further south.

“Now into Saturday evening once again, temperatures will fall away, the chilly nights this weekend. 

“Something to bear in mind of course, if you are heading to London. 

“But actually for many Saturday night is looking dry, the clear spells will remain in the south. 

“A bit more cloud will be pulled into Scotland, Northern Ireland, Northwest England, as well as North Wales with some showers, to come here with temperatures not quite as low as Friday night, we’re looking at high single figures fairly widely, mid to perhaps low single figures in some sheltered spots.” 

According to Mr McGivern, there will be plenty of sunshine on Sunday but also some showers and cloudier weather. 

He said: “But Sunday starts off with some sunshine in the south and some breaks in the cloud further north as well, although there will be showers affecting western and central Scotland, Northern Ireland and then later on towards north west England. 

“Into the midlands as well as North Wales though showers will be hit or miss and for many, it’s looking like a dry day away from those areas with broken cloud. 

“But it will be cloudier I think especially in the south compared with Saturday.

“Temperatures however with the winds now no longer coming from the north. 

“It looks like there’ll be a degree of so higher compared with Saturday.” 

Mr McGivern added that Monday would also be cloudy with slightly higher temperatures compared to Sunday. 

He said: “And Monday continues the theme of increasing cloudiness and also increasing warmth. 

“That degree or so higher compared with Sunday.”
