On Thursday EU leaders decided against a complete vaccine export ban to Britain. However they agreed in principle to introduce tougher vaccine export controls.

Mr Macron has taken a hard-line stance commenting: “I support the fact that we must block all exports for as long as some drug companies don’t respect their commitments with Europeans.”

However he was savagely criticised by Express.co.uk readers who argued he is jealous of Britain’s success.

One posted: “This is nothing about AstraZeneca and how effective it is.

“This is all about preventing the UK from coming out of this pandemic before the EU does; they are scared and getting desperate!”

Another added: “What a disgusting human being Macron really is.

“He should be ashamed of himself threatening people’s lives like he is.”

A third asked: “Where are all the Remainers who love the EU so much?”

The UK’s coronavirus vaccination programme is currently far ahead of EU member states.

Britain has given at least one jab to over 44 percent of its population, versus an EU average of 13 percent.

Meanwhile many EU nations are fighting another Covid-19 wave with new restrictions being imposed across the continent.

On Friday Germany designated the whole of France a “high risk” area for coronavirus.

This means travellers from France will have to show a negative test to cross the border then quarantine for ten days.

Brussels is locked in a furious row with AstraZeneca, the British-Swedish company which is making the vaccines designed by Oxford University.

The manufacturer is expected to give the EU less than a third of its requested order by the end of March due to production problems at a European factory.

In response EU leaders are demanding AstraZeneca ship vaccines made in Britain to the bloc but the company is currently refusing.

Other Express.co.uk readers warned Britain could retaliate if the EU blocks vaccine shipments.

Coronavirus Act extended for a further six months

One said: “Puppet Macron need to be taught a hard lesson.

“You block our supply of vaccine and we will ban all imports from France.

“All Macron has ever been is a lapdog to Merkel.”

A second posted: “The EU is insolent and sneering at us now we have left, revealing their true selves.

“Remainers, see how they duped you with their false charm?

“Well now the mask is down we see them for who they really are, do you?”

Earlier this month Italy used powers granted by the EU to block the shipments of 250,000 AstraZeneca vaccines to Australia.

Australia protested in response and asked the European Commission to intervene directly.
