Britons FURIOUS amid fears coronavirus will force PM into Brexit extension –’Don’t do it!’

The reaction came as business leaders called on the Prime Minister to seek an extension as there is not enough time to complete trade negotiations. Although the Government has insisted it will not seek an extension, business leaders have warned there is “not enough bandwidth” to complete negotiations due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Some on the continent have already signalled they will accept an extension but members of the public have expressed their outrage at that possibility.

Paul Cook wrote on Facebook: “Don’t take it Boris.

“If you do you will be playing right into their hands.”

Another said: “No he won’t or he had better not.

“It’s clear from how the EU has treated Italy and Spain that the EU is a pointless organisation.

“We are better off without them and certainly shouldn’t send them any more money.”

Bernadette Hawman said: “Don’t delay Boris!

“We voted you in to honour our wishes to Leave!”

Ray Lamb also said: “Just go to WTO rules.

“The EU is visibly collapsing before our eyes.

“We need to be completely clear when it collapses totally.”

Trade talks between Brexit Britain and the EU had to be postponed last month following the outbreak of the coronavirus across Europe.

The EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier then contracted the virus forcing him and his counterpart, David Frost to self-isolate.

Talks were resumed this week via video link as the two countries discussed the withdrawal agreement.

Further talks are planned going forward although some EU diplomats have stated that it is likely the transition will have to be extended.

One said: “It’s increasingly obvious the transition period will have to be extended.

“It’s a matter of political momentum – when things get so bad in Britain that Johnson can do a U-turn and say he is prioritising saving lives and hence delays Brexit.”

Business leaders in the UK also agreed on the need for an extension due to COVID-19.

Helen Brocklebank, CEO of luxury sector representatives Walpole, said: “Everyone is hoping for an extension.

“Brexit is very much taking a back seat at the moment as companies fight to survive.”

The deadline to request an extension is on June 30.
