In a sickening attack, Councillor Sarah Morton commented on a Facebook post that announced the passing of Prince Philip. Accompanied by an article from the Liverpool Echo, she said: “Just a list of reasons why the world is a better place without this fascist piece of inbred sh** in it.” Commenting on the story, Express.co.uk reacted with fury and criticised the councillor for her comments.

One person said: “Yet more great publicity for the upcoming Hartlepool by-election.”

A second said: “She just goes to show that the Labour has no class or knowledge of political detente.

“Just shouty, shouty and gets nothing done.”

A third said: “Another Labour gem!”

A fourth added: “Strange comment to make about a man who put himself in harm’s way, fighting fascists.

“It just seems to be an insult thrown at anyone who doesn’t fit in with left-wing orthodoxy.”

Following the backlash from the incredible comments, the councillor apologised for her remarks.

The comments have also since been deleted.

She said: “I wholeheartedly apologise for my comments, they were made in anger on my personal page that is closed, it was a deeply regrettable reaction to the content of the article.

“I removed the comments soon after posting as I realised they were insensitive and could be hurtful to those who have suffered loss and I am truly sorry for that.

“They were wrong and I should not have said this.

“I apologise for the offence caused by my comments.”

Cllr Morton was first elected to represent the Clubmoor ward in 2019.

Prince Philip died on Friday at the age of 99 weeks after being released from the King Edward VII hospital.

Confirming the death of the Duke of Edinburgh on Friday, a statement from Buckingham Palace said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”

Since his death, the Royal Family have paid several tributes to the Duke as they mourn his loss.

Indeed, his sons all praised the impact the Duke had on society and the messages of support they have received from the public.

Returning to the UK, Prince Harry said his grandfather had been charming until the end of his life.

Paying tribute to his grandfather, Prince Harry said: “He was authentically himself, with a seriously sharp wit, and could hold the attention of any room due to his charm – and also because you never knew what he might say next.

“He will be remembered as the longest-reigning consort to the monarch, a decorated serviceman, a prince and a duke.

“But to me, like many of you who have lost a loved one or grandparent over the pain of this past year, he was my grandpa: master of the barbecue, legend of banter, and cheeky right ’til the end.”
