Britons don’t think Camilla should become Queen, new poll shows
Britons don’t think Camilla should become Queen as a shock poll takes aim at the official title ahead of the Coronation.
In a survey carried out on 1,569 British adults online between March 24 and 27, only 14 percent of respondents thought Camilla should be called Queen, while 36 percent said she should retain her current title as Queen Consort.
A further 23 percent said Camilla should have no title at all, and 16 percent thought she should remain as the Duchess of Cornwall, the Mirror reports.
Camilla will now officially be known as Queen after the Palace revealed her official title for the first time on the invitation for King Charles’s Coronation.
A senior Palace source suggested that the Coronation is an “appropriate time” to start using ‘Queen Camilla’ in an official capacity.
“It made sense to refer to Her Majesty as The Queen Consort in the early months of His Majesty’s reign, to distinguish from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,” the source said.
“‘Queen Camilla’ is the appropriate title to set against ‘King Charles’ on the invitation. The Coronation is an appropriate time to start using ‘Queen Camilla’ in an official capacity.”
Elsewhere on the survey conducted by Deltapoll, where wider questions of the monarchy were asked, 23 percent of respondents said they were in favour of a republic, and 51 percent said they believed Britain would still have a monarchy in 50 years’ time.
Britons were also asked who they think had done the most damage to the monarchy’s reputation recently, with a close result of 46 percent of people naming Prince Andrew, while 43 percent said Prince Harry.
