Briton dies while heading for a tropical holiday in Antigua
A 29-year-old Briton with a medical history has died after becoming unconscious during a British Airways flight to the Caribbean. The man was reportedly travelling with his mother to the island of Antigua.
Emergency crews were ready to meet the flight at VC Bird International Airport, Antigua, after pilots aboard the Boeing 777-236 radioed ahead to warn of the situation. The man, from London, had become “unresponsive” on the BA flight on Thursday, June 22, from Gatwick Airport.
According to reports, he died around 6.30pm after attempts by airline staff and emergency services to save his life failed. He had previously been diagnosed with hypotension, muscular dystrophy and ulcerative colitis, his mother reportedly told emergency services after they attempted to revive the man.

Antigua police said: “We are investigating this incident like we investigate all incidents of this nature. However, foul play is not suspected at this stage and we will be working with the family and will be cooperating with them fully.
“We offer our condolences to the mother and the rest of the family. Imagine coming to our beautiful island and to end up like this. It is so sad. Our sympathy is with the family.” British Airways also confirmed the “medical emergency”, according to a report in The Sun.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a statement: “We are assisting the family of a British man who died in Antigua and Barbuda.”

Newspapers also reported that the man had been hospitalised many times as a result of his medical conditions. Prior to the incident, police said that the mother and son had stayed in St Kitts and Nevis, where the young man had fallen ill and had been hospitalised.
He reportedly spent five days in intensive care and was further diagnosed with sepsis and blood poisoning. According to his mother, he had become dehydrated and was losing weight rapidly after discharging himself from hospital.
The Foreign Office has been contacted for comment.
