British tourist, 73, found dead after going missing in Fuerteventura
A British mum who was on holiday with her family before going missing has been found dead on the island of Fuerteventura
Police have said they have found the body of Anne Baillie, 73, who went missing on Wednesday.
Her son Alex asked locals and holidaymakers for their help in a social media plea two days after she was last seen at the Riu Palace Tres Islas Hotel last week.
It is understood that some of her personal belongings including her mobile were found on a beach nearby.
The family are said to have been staying at the hotel on the island, the second largest of the Canary Islands, with her family.
Liverpool-based Alex wrote alongside a photo of his 73-year-old mum: ‘This is my mum Anne Baillie.
‘She’s been reported missing since around 9.30am Wednesday June 7.
‘Last seen at the RIU Palace Tres Islas with personal belongings found on the beach directly behind the Hotel RIU Oliva.
‘Please share and contact the police if you have seen her in the area. Thank you.’
Local reports around the time she disappeared said she had gone out for her usual morning walk.
Yesterday/on Sunday a local council-run emergency services organisation confirmed her body had been found.
The discovery is understood to have made late on Saturday.
Fuerteventura Emergencias said in a statement: ‘The lifeless body of the English tourist last seen on June 7 has been located in the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park in the municipality of La Oliva.
‘Different emergency and security organisations had been involved in the search.’
Anne’s relatives reportedly raised the alarm after she failed to return to her hotel.
Hotel worker volunteers are said to have been among those who took part in the search.
A post-mortem will take place and the results sent to a local investigating court instead of being made immediately public as is normal in Spain.
There have been no reports the authorities are treating her death as suspicious at this stage.
A British expat based in Fuerteventura, updating locals on the news Anne had been found dead, wrote yesterday/on Sunday on Facebook: ‘Unfortunately Anne’s body was discovered last night on the dunes.
‘Thank you to everyone who helped search and shared her son’s post.
‘Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences goes to her family and friends in this awfully difficult time.
‘I know her son felt there was an incredible community on the island and it means so much to him.’
The area where Anne’s body was discovered is in the north-east of Fuenteventura in a desert landscape full of contrasts bordering the blue ocean.
The sand dunes offer spectacular views to Lobos Island and Lanzarote.
