British ski instructor admits raping woman in Australia
A British ski instructor has pleaded guilty to raping a woman and attacking her friend in a crime so violent that police believed there was more than one perpetrator.
The “horrendous” attack took place last July in Jindabyne, a resort town in the Snowy Mountains around 180km (110 miles) south of the capital Canberra.
Matthew James Williams, 29, faced Queanbeyan Local Court on Tuesday where CCTV footage showed him following the man and woman walking from a pub to their hotel at around 1am.
He punched and kicked the man until he became unconscious, before attacking the woman.
Local media reported that the woman screamed and said: “What do you want? Do you want money? Take what you want.”
Williams laughed at her before repeatedly punching her until she blacked out.
When she woke up, Williams violently removed her clothes and raped her on the street.
He also hit her several times to stop her from escaping, police said.
He fled the scene after the male victim regained consciousness and ran to get help from a passing car.
The victims’ injuries were so severe that police initially suspected there had been multiple attackers.
Five days later, Williams was arrested after his DNA and watch were found at the scene.
He pleaded guilty to charges of aggravated sexual assault, inflicting actual bodily harm with intent to have sexual intercourse with another, and possessing a prohibited drug.
Williams had worked at the well-known Perisher Ski Resort since 2014. He was working as a ski-cross and alpine racing teacher while on a temporary visa in Australia.
The victims were tourists and have since returned to their home country.
Williams will be sentenced in May.
