British man, 35, drowns in Ibiza 'while taking underwater photos'
A British man has died after being pulled unconscious from the sea in Ibiza.
The 35-year-old is thought to have been taking photos underwater with a friend in Punta Galera, a cove near the popular resort of San Antonio, when he got into difficulties.
His pal raised the alarm at around 6.15pm on Wednesday evening and police and paramedics were scrambled to the bay.
Despite desperate attempts to revive him near the water’s edge, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead a short while later.
It was not immediately clear if he lives in Ibiza.
Travel reviews describe Punta Galera as an old stone quarry next to the sea, which is a popular nudist area.
One adds: ‘It is little visited, among other things because there is neither a bar nor sand.
‘However, it is easy to jump into the water as the depth is more than two metres, apart from a few places where you can get out over shallower submerged rocks.’
The quiet spot is reached by taking the road from San Antonio to Santa Agnes and turning off towards the sea before the bay of Cala Salada.
A Civil Guard spokesman confirmed the deceased was a 35-year-old British male.
He said: ‘The alarm was raised around 6.15pm. We got a call from a regional emergency response coordination centre.
‘All we can say at the moment is that the dead man was 35 and British. An investigation is underway.’
A post-mortem is expected to be carried out later today.
The results will be sent to a local court tasked with coordinating the ongoing probe.
A spokesman for the regional government-controlled emergency response coordination centre said: ‘We received a call to say a man had been pulled unconscious out of the water around 6.15pm on Wednesday.
‘He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly afterwards despite attempts to revive him and save his life.’
