As travel restrictions imposed throughout the pandemic are lifted, many holidaymakers have been eagerly awaiting their first trip abroad in years. However, the Chair of Cornwall Airport, Tim Jeans, warned British travellers to expect severe delays at airports leading well into the summer months.  Mr Jeans made clear that British air travel is experiencing a serious “problem” that will not “go away overnight.”

He continued: “it’s probably going to be June before things turn to anything like normal.”

LBC host Andrew Pierce confirmed statements from the air travel expert, “you’re now saying June – that’s going to start biting into people’s summer holidays”.

Jeans explained the British population can expect “months of discontent” as they attempt to travel overseas in the coming weeks.

The Cornwall Airport chair warned passengers will have to endure “long waits to check-in, long waits for security and long waits to collect your bag.”

Unfortunately for British travellers, the expert predicts lengthy delays at every stage of the airport journey, certain to impact thousands of travel plans.

In order to prepare for the delays, Jeans suggests airline passengers should arrive at the airport with hours to spare.

“Get to the airport at least three hours prior,” he highlighted to expectant travellers.

According to Jeans, despite the “best efforts” of leading airlines, delays will extend until at least June and all major airports will have an inescapable “long wait” for passengers.

Holidaymakers expecting to travel later in the year should remain cautious as there is no certainty that air travel will be able to return to pre-pandemic efficiency any time soon.

Jeans suggested the current delays may become a long-term feature of the British holiday experience.

The delays are the “reality of air travel as we come out of the pandemic,” explained Jeans.

Delays to travel will be “hours rather than days,” clarifies Jeans, but passengers will still have to be patient during their “long wait” at major airports.

Jeans warned of a sour start to thousands of summer holidays as he says “it’s going to be a less customer-friendly experience than we might have had pre-pandemic.”

Global airlines have experienced immense pressure as strict travel limitations were rather suddenly lifted as the pandemic pressures eased.

Passengers are protected by a set of travel-related rights which require airlines to provide “care and assistance” when severe delays are experienced. 

Depending on the cause of the delay, passengers may also be entitled to compensation from the airline as an apology for inconvenience.

Major airports, including London Heathrow and Manchester Airport, are already experiencing severe delays to travel as passengers embark on holidays during the Easter break.
