British hiker Esther Dingley goes missing in the Pyrenees
A British woman who has spent six years travelling around Europe in a camper van has gone missing in the Pyrenees.
Esther Dingley, 37, was on top of the Pic de Sauvegarde mountain on the French-Spanish border when she last spoke to her partner Dan Colegate via WhatsApp a week ago.
Mr Colegate said he was “broken” and “shattered” by her disappearance, which he heard about while he was staying at a farm in the Gascony area of France.
Ms Dingley was due to end her solo trek on Wednesday after travelling in the couple’s camper van.
Writing on Facebook, Mr Colegate said: “Search and rescue teams have so far found no trace of her.
“The only purpose of this post is to ask for prayers, thoughts, candles and whatever you have.
“I’ve not been saying anything, but this wonderful person believes in the power of positive thought and right now I’ll take anything if it means that she can be found. I need her back. I can’t face the alternative.”
Mr Colegate added that he was “heading back up” the mountain to join the search being conducted by French authorities.
In a post on Facebook, the Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne said it was “actively searching” for Ms Dingley, who is an experienced hiker.
The couple had lived in Durham before deciding to go travelling together in 2014.
