British attorney general rejects report he has abandoned backstop time-limit
LONDON (Reuters) – Britain’s Attorney General Geoffrey Cox said on Monday much of a newspaper report that said he had abandoned attempts to secure a time-limit or unilateral exit mechanism for Britain from the Irish “backstop” was inaccurate.
“The DT (Daily Telegraph) reporting of the last 24 hours consists of misunderstood fag ends dressed up as facts. Some of it is accurate, much more of it isn’t and what is not is far more significant than what is,” Cox said on Twitter.
“Complex and detailed negotiations cannot be conducted in public.”
Cox is currently negotiating with the European Union to secure legally-binding assurances that the “backstop”, an insurance policy to avoiding the return of hard border controls between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, would not be permanent.
