Britain's oldest newlyweds said 'I do' 50 years after they first met

Britain’s oldest newlyweds, who have a combined age of 180, say their special day ‘could not have gone any better’.

Roy Button, 93, and Dorothy Moreton, 87, made history when they tied the knot yesterday afternoon.

The lovebirds first met 50 years ago and drifted apart, but their love blossomed when fate brought them back together 12 months ago.

They’re surprised and flattered at the media attention their love story has gotten but insist they are ‘just a couple who have got married’.

Recalling their big day Dorothy said: ‘It was quite overwhelming. Roy said he had tears in his eyes when he saw me in my wedding outfit.

‘We couldn’t have wished for a better day – it could not have gone any better.’

The pair said ‘I do’ in front of family and friends at Nuneaton Register Office in Warickshire before a ‘perfect’ reception at the nearby Attleborough Liberal Club.

Dorothy added: ‘We have had so many cards, we have not had chance to even open them all, it has just been so nice.’

Since their story was first revealed by CoventryLive they’ve found themselves the talk of the town.

‘We can’t believe it really, being in the papers, on the TV,’ said Dorothy.

‘We are just a couple who have got married, but it has been lovely and very surprising.’

Roy, from Attleborough, near Norwich, said he first met Dorothy 50 years ago when they were married to different people.

He said: ‘We used to all go out and go on family holidays together to places like Blackpool and the Isle of Wight, our kids grew up together.’

The families kept in touch but drifted apart.

Roy, who used to work at foundry lost his wife in 1996, re-married and then lost his second wife in 2017.

There was similar tragedy for Dorothy whose husband of 40 years Trevor died nine years ago. She also lost two of her sons.

But happiness was on the horizon for both of them.

Just over 12 months ago Dorothy and Roy bumped into each other shopping in Nuneaton and have been inseparable ever since.

Dorothy said: ‘He followed me round and then asked for my phone number and we went from that really.’

Their rekindled friendship soon blossomed into love and they look forward to spending the rest of their lives together.
