A British man died from an asthma attack while on a flight to New York this week, it has been reported. Shimoin Brauer, 25, from Stamford Hill, London, was said to be within an hour of landing in the city when he suffered the attack. This had prompted him to reach for his inhaler. But he dropped the life-saving device and was unable to retrieve it, leaving him unable to breathe.

According to a report from Jewish News, Mr Brauer, an orthodox Jewish man, was planning to volunteer at a summer camp in the US after boarding a flight from London.

But he suffered the asthma attack 45 minutes before landing. The publication, citing a member of Stamford Hill’s orthodox community, said he “lost his inhaler and fell unconscious”.

Crew members attempted to provide oxygen, but the asthma attack had closed his airways, leaving him unable to receive their aid.

The NHS says asthma attacks kill three people in the UK every day, with symptoms including breathlessness, wheezing and coughing which are getting worse.

Even an inhaler, it says, may not appear to work, and that these tell-tale signs may not all happen at once. They may begin and continue getting worse over a period of hours.

The crew attempted to administer emergency CPR but could not save Mr Brauer’s life. Jewish News added that an investigation by a coroner is now pending.

The report did not mention with which airline the man had flown on his trip to New York, a journey that can take more than eight hours to complete.

Mr Brauer was a member of Stamford Hill’s Charedi community, a tight-knit group of orthodox Jewish people living in the Hackney sub-district.

Community members live with minimal interaction with secular Britons and dedicate time to studying the Torah and fulfilling mitzvot, the scripture’s primary commandments.
