Paul Wynn, 57, passed away just minutes before he was due to wed Alison Wynn, his partner of 21 years. The freelance photographer was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in May but told it was terminal eight days before the ceremony – prompting the couple to try to tie the knot. Paul collapsed just as Alison, 38, walked towards him at Saltcoats Town Hall in North Ayrshire.

First-aiders were unable to revive him. Alison, who had changed her surname to Wynn by deed poll a few years ago, described Paul as a “fantastic dad” and wished they had married without delay after doctors gave him their diagnosis.

She said: “If I had known we didn’t have long I would have tried to arrange the wedding for the beginning of the week. He never actually got any treatment.”

The couple’s son Sandy, 20, walked Alison down the aisle.

But she realised Paul had slumped down in his wheelchair as she began to move towards him.

Alison said: “By the time I got to him I called his name a couple of times. He didn’t turn around, he didn’t look at me and I realised there was something wrong and I started breaking down and I started shouting his name and we knew something wasn’t right.”

Paul’s best woman Danielle Sood helped him off the chair and on to the ground. First-aiders also rushed to administer CPR and use a defibrillator but to no avail.

Alison added: “It was hard. It’s taken me a wee while to get to where I am now and every day just seems to merge into one.

“I’m having to get up and moving every day for the sake of my children but I can’t eat.

“Paul and I lost a child in 2004 after I had a miscarriage so it gives me a bit of comfort that he’s up there with our child.

“His mother passed away in 2020 so at least he’s with her now too.” The couple, who met in 1999 through the Jehovah’s Witnesses, had five children. As well as Sandy, they are Tarquin, 15, Marcus, 13, Louise, eight, and Poppy, four. Paul also had six kids from previous relationships.

Alison said: “Paul loved going out and taking pictures of anything and everything. We were his life, he would do anything for his kids.”

Paul first contacted his GP in May after suffering bleeding from his stomach and was alarmed at how much weight he was losing. He was also struggling to eat, eventually only consuming liquids.

The diagnosis prompted the couple to bring forward their wedding to last Friday after it was originally set for July 16.
