Brexit TWIST: Angela Merkel secretly told Hunt Europe willing to RENEGOTIATE backstop

Tory leadership candidate Jeremy Hunt made the astonishing revelation on Sky News’ Soppy Ridge show on Sunday morning. After an interminable impasse that has cost Theresa May  her premiership and led to the downfall of her deal three times in the House of Commons, Ms Ridge appeared shocked that Mr Hunt felt the deal could be reworked. The foreign secretary explained: “I had a conversation with Angela Merkel earlier this week at the D-Day celebrations.

“And I’m absolutely clear that if we take the right approach to this the Europeans would be willing to negotiate on the package.

“She said that ‘of course, with a new British Prime Minister, we would want to look ay any solution you have.’

“She said, ‘it’s up to you. Germany doesn’t have that border with the Republic of Ireland – you do.

“So you need to come up with a solution.’”

Mr Hunt continued: “It’s clear that the backstop is not acceptable to parliament.

“So it’s going to be a solution that’s based around technology – what the Germans call an intelligent border.

“And I think that’s doable but we have to find the structures that reassure people that this is deliverable.

“And we have to find the mechanisms to deal with the situation where we can’t agree what technology is capable of.

“But if you’re asking me as someone who’s done deals all their life, is there a deal here? Yes, there is.”

Jeremy Hunt is one of eleven Tory MPs vying for Mrs May’s job.

The Prime Minister officially stepped down from her role on Friday but will stay on until her successor is chosen.

The decision between the final two candidates will be taken by approximately 160,000 members of the Tory Party.

The favourite is currently former London mayor Boris Johnson.
