Newcastle and Spurs legend David Ginola stars on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! which kicks off tonight on ITV. A star-studded lineup includes ex-BBC Breakfast host Louise Minchin, Olympic diving gold medallist Matty Lee and pop star Frankie Bridge. The show swapped Australia for North Wales’ Gwrych Castle in Abergele last year owing to the restrictions imposed by the coronavirus pandemic. Ant and Dec and the celebrity lineup will return to the cold and windy castle again this year.
The Nineties and Noughties heartthrob arrived on English soil prior to the start of the 1995/96 season, and was an integral part of Kevin Keegan’s side that narrowly missed out on the Premier League title.
He later moved on to Spurs, Aston Villa, and Everton — where he retired before moving into acting, modelling and football punditry.
Off the pitch, Mr Ginola married fashion model Coraline Ginaola (née Delpin) in 1991, and they have two grown-up children together — son Andrea and daughter Carla.
They split in 2016, and divorced soon after.
A 2018 report in The Times claimed both Mr Ginola and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry were involved in “Eurostar divorces”.
The report said both of the French football legends’ marriages were terminated in London, after their spouses quickly filed for divorce in the UK.
British courts reportedly tend to be much more generous to women than their European counterparts.
Prior to the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, divorce was covered by EU law, known as “Brussels II” in legal circles.
Divorcing couples from states within the bloc would compete to be first to file for divorce proceedings, with the UK often being a favourable court for the poorer party.
It became such a common practice, that the term “Eurostar divorce” was commonplace.
Lawyer Julian Lipson explained to The Times: “The divorce systems in France and England are fundamentally different.
“Frances operates a rigid system differentiating between pre- and post-marital money and treating as utterly sacrosanct anything that is inherited.
“England has a discretionary award system, where everything is up for grabs and the starting point is 50/50.
“So if you are the richer party, the stakes are high to get in first in France, if you can.
“And if you are the poorer party, it’s the other way round and England will almost always give you a much more substantial settlement.”

London earned the widely reported reputation as the “divorce capital of the world” for favouring poorer spouses.
Fellow lawyer Stacey Nevin told the newspaper that wealthy British-based men filing divorcing their wives were advised to jump on the first Eurostar to Paris to file a petition there.
However, upon the UK leaving the bloc, it was no longer important who filed first.
Instead, “connectedness” to a country was most relevant.
English and Welsh courts would be able to decide where the divorce should happen, based on the country which the divorcing parties have the closest connection with, rather than which is most advantageous to the respective parties.
James Brown, Mr Ginola’s lawyer, told the Daily Mail in 2016 that Mrs Ginola initiated divorce proceedings.
With the old regulations, lawyer Delphine Eskenazi told The Times people were filing for divorce much faster than they might have done otherwise, which sometimes resulted in “a lot of resentment and anger”.
In the Ginola family’s case, however, Mr Brown told the Mirror that the pair had tried to reach an “amicable agreement”.
An agreement was reached in 2017, but Mr and Mrs Ginola were back in court two years later after the ex-footballer was accused of not honouring the terms of the agreement.
Further details of the 2019 court case were not reported.
Since the split, Mr Ginola has been dating model Maeva Denat, who is 22 years his junior, and the couple welcomed a baby girl in 2018.
David Ginola stars on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! which begins on Sunday night at 9pm.
