Brexiteer Douglas Carswell has praised the leadership of Boris Johnson, suggesting that the EU was exploiting the UK’s negotiating team under Theresa May. He tweeted: “When you read this from one of Theresa May’s Brexit team, you realise why we were walked over by the other side. Thank goodness we now have Boris.”

This was in response to Former MP, Housing Minister & Chief of Staff to the PM Gavin Barwell’s tweet about Brexit negotiations.

Gavin Barwell tweeted: “First, the EU is not asking the UK to align with its rules on environmental or health and safety standards going forward, it is asking for that on state aid rules and I agree it is wrong to do so.”

Mr Barwell added: “Second, the current UK Government agreed in the Political Declaration that where a dispute concerns a matter of EU law the CJEU should be the ultimate arbiter on that point of law so the UK is going back on what it previously agreed.”

Boris Johnson is currently planning to meet for further negotiations with Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission president.

This will be another effort to unblock post-Brexit trade negotiations.

British and EU negotiators begin their final scheduled round of trade talks tomorrow.

The hope is that Mr Johnson and Ms von der Leyen would be able to increase “political momentum” into talks to get passed the current impasse.

It is expected that the Prime Minister will Mr Johnson to the commission president in late June.

At present, the talks have become grounded on disputes over fishing rights and EU demands for common standards on state aid, workers’ rights, and the environment.

The deadline for the UK to request an extension of up to two years is the end of June.

Many expect a last-minute extension will be required.

A European Council meeting on June 19 will allow EU27 member states to review the progress of trade talks with Britain.
