Brexit Party MEP mocks ‘failed’ Tory Party – ‘why would we want to damage our brand?’

Brexit Party chairman Richard Tice this week criticised the Government and both Conservative leadership candidates Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt for ignoring the party’s letter over a no deal Brexit. Earlier this month Nigel Farage and Mr Tice delivered a letter to 10 Downing Street demanding to be part of the negotiating process but did not get a response. Jonathan Bullock, a Brexit Party MEP, claimed the party would not want to be associated with the failures of the Conservative Party over Britain’s departure from the bloc.

Asked if the Brexit Party was hopeful that Boris Johnson might be more “inclusive” with them, Mr Bullock told talkRADIO: “I am not sure why we would want to damage our brand with Boris Johnson and the Conservative Party.

“The Conservative Party have failed to deliver Brexit. Theresa May promised 108 times that we would leave on March 29 and we didn’t.

“Boris is essentially promising the same thing, for Halloween, why should we believe him? He is not someone who has always stuck to delivering what he has said.

“He is obviously appealing to the Conservative membership in this, the membership, of course, voted many of them for the Brexit Party in the recent European elections.”

He added: “He should be saying ‘the Brexit Party has got it right and we are going to follow what they are suggesting’, that would be a sensible approach.

“We need to get Brexit out of the way so we can get on with the rest of the positive things in this country, and the way to do it, is a managed no deal, and then hopefully a free trade deal with the EU, but that is obviously up to the EU to play ball as well.

“But, we would be out. We would carry on trading, the world would go on and everybody could get on with the rest of their lives.”

Speaking at a press conference earlier this week, Mr Tice was furious the Brexit Party’s demand to be included in negotiations had been ignored.

He said: “It is over two weeks now since we delivered a letter to the current Prime Minister Theresa May asking that we should be allowed in to look at the state of no deal preparations.

“It is pretty shocking that we have had no reply either from the Prime Minister or from any of the candidates. When you think there is still another four months to go, are we really inferring that nothing is going on.

“There is no one better than ourselves and some of our elected MEPs, given that we had a direct democratic mandate to be involved in the negotiations. We should be allowed in to look at the state of these preparations so that we know what is going on.

“This way we can give confidence to the people on leaving with a WTO Brexit and that should happen now.”

Brexit Party leader, Mr Farage, has been vocal on his scepticism towards Mr Johnson and has explained he fears another extension rather than Brexit promises being kept.

Mr Johnson has vowed not to work with the Brexit Party leader in EU negotiations if becomes Prime Minister.

Speaking at hustings, the Conservative Party leadership candidate said he believed in the tactic of not giving other parties “the oxygen of publicity”.

Asked to clarify that meant not working with the Brexit Party leader, Mr Johnson said: “It’s a pretty clear no…absolutely not.”
