Brexit Party MEP goads entire EU Parliament by branding the bloc ‘undemocratic’

He accused Brussels of attempting to scupper Brexit negotiations in order to keep Britain locked in the bloc. In his EU Parliament-wide dispatch, Mr Habib wrote: “I have watched incredulity as many MEPs have, over the last couple of months, spoken ill of the British people’s decision in 2016 to vote to leave the EU. “Comments made in Parliament range from astonishment to outright commendation of that democratic decision – the biggest democratic mandate ever afforded to a British government.

“The EU bangs the drum of democracy but its action belie this drumbeat.

“If it were a genuinely democratic institution it would accept the result of the British referendum and work positively with the British government to enable the UK to leave the EU.”

He added: “It has done the opposite, conspiring to frustrate Brexit at every opportunity.”

The scathing memo attracted criticism from Liberal Democrat MEP Sheila Ritche.

She wrote to MEPs: “Thank you for the courtesy of this letter, with which I pretty much wholly disagree.”

Mr Habib mocked the lonely response and pledged to continue “challenging them on this democratic nonsense that t hey go on about”.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, the Brexit Party MEP accused Brussels of “gas-lighting” people into believing the EU is democratic.

“They are anything but democratic and need to be held to account,” he added.

“They keep saying it until they hope you believe it.”

He also challenged the 37 signatories of a letter to European Council President Donald Tusk, begging the EU’s most senior official to reject Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal and help arrange another delay to the UK’s departure.

The memo was signed by MEPs from the Lib Dems, Labour, Green Party and SNP.

Mr Habib said: “It is noteworthy that none of those 37 had the guts to interact with me and take me up on my accusations.”

The letter to Mr Tusk read: “Ahead of the European Council meeting that will unavoidably have to consider the question of extending the Brexit deadline, we, elected representatives from progressive opposition parties, representing the majority of British people who now want to remain in the EU, urge you to bear the following in mind.

“Boris Johnson does not represent the views of the entire nation and now leads only a minority government.

“Every single opposition party now wants the UK to hold a second referendum on Brexit.

“Polls indicate that a majority of the UK public is likely to vote to remain in such a referendum.”

Remainers have stepped up their attempts to scupper the Prime Minister’s effort to deliver a Brexit deal as he appears on the cusp of securing an agreement.

Sir Vince Cable, the former Lib Dem leader, led the mob to hold talks in Brussels with senior diplomats and MEPs in the hope of securing another lengthy Brexit delay.
