Airlines will now be expected to offer a similar refund scheme to that provided by rail companies for late services, in a move made possible by Brexit. Now the UK is free from EU aviation regulation, the current system whereby passengers are only entitled to compensation if a flight is delayed by more than three hours will be scrapped. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps will announce a public consultation into the proposals today. He has said: “We’re making the most of our Brexit dividend with our new freedoms outside of the EU, and this review will help build a trustworthy, reputable sector.” Richard Moriarty, chief executive at the UK Civil Aviation Authority welcomed the government action to improve the rights of air passengers. He said: “The proposals will improve passenger rights and effectively benefit consumers.”
