BREXIT EMERGENCY? BBC host REVEALS May has TWO shock meetings in Brussels before departure

BBC reporter Adam Fleming, who is based in Brussels, has revealed that Prime Minister Theresa May will still have to travel at least two more times in the European Union headquarters before her tenure ends. Mrs May resigned in an emotional speech outside of 10 Downing Street on Friday morning, spelling out the timeline of her departure. While Mrs May will step down as Tory party leader on June 7, she will still serve as Prime Minister until the end of July, when the next leader of the country is announced.

Speaking during the BBC’s Brexitcast podcast, Fleming revealed that Mrs May’s time as leader  over the next two months means she will have to attend at least two more EU summits  in Brussels.

This could alarm Brexiteers over any last-minute concessions to EU leaders before Mrs May’s departure is complete and her succession confirmed.

BBC reporter and Brexitcast host Chris Mason said: “The speech yesterday was her tending her resignation as leader of the Tory party

“She carries on as Prime Minister for the best part of two months after that, while the contest runs its course until the end of July.”

That means she has two more EU summits to come to – the one next Tuesday to parcel out the top jobs and the end of term summit in June

Fleming added: “That means she has two more EU summits to come to – the one next Tuesday to parcel out the top jobs and the end of term summit in June.

“I don’t think she’ll do a doorstop on the red carpet. She has fired herself and she always hated doing the press doorsteps in Brussels.”

The timing of her departure means Mrs May will greet President Trump during his state visit to Britain between June 3 – 5.

The Prime Minister will also attend a European Union summit next Tuesday, which leaders are expected to discuss the next European Commission, Council and Parliament presidents.

However, EU leaders will also discuss the next steps of Britain’s divorce as part of their Brussels summit on May 28.

German Chancellor’s Angela Merkel’s deputy spokesman announced the bloc’s plans within an hour of Mrs May standing down.

EU diplomats and officials in Brussels have pleaded with the next British prime minister to bring an end to the Brexit deadlock as soon as possible.

A second EU summit, and Mrs May’s last, on June 20 – 21 is supposed to centre on breaking the Brexit deadlock, which could see the Brexit stalement shift before the next Prime Minister is decided.

There is concern that Mrs May could come under huge pressure from EU leaders to make concessions, even though she will be serving in a caretaker capacity as leader of the UK.

Just hours after Mrs May’s resingiaton speech, French President Emmanuel Macron urged “swift clarification” on Brexit.
