Brexit celebrations erupt in Glasgow as union jack wavers party in George Square
Scores were pictured waving union jacks and singing patriotic songs. A separate protest in Glasgow was held against the UK’s EU exit on Buchanan Street.
According to Heart Scotland News one Brexit supporter was detained by police after an altercation with remainers.
A majority of Scots voted remain in 2016, but a significant minority did back Brexit.
In last year’s European Parliament elections the Brexit Party secured one of Scotland’s six MEPs.
Speaking to Heart Scotland News one Brexiteer in George Square commented: “I’m so happy it’s been a long time coming.”
Hundreds of anti-Brexit protestors also gathered in Edinburgh where they were addressed by SNP politicians.
The moment Brexit took place was marked in Glasgow’s George Square by cheering, the throwing of confetti and waving of union jack flags.
Separately many thousands gathered to celebrate Brexit in London’s Parliament Square.
The rally, organised by Leave Means Leave, was addressed by Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage.
Mr Farage said: “The fact is the war is over. We have won.
“Now we have in Boris Johnson a charismatic Prime Minister who is saying all of the right things.
“I think there’s a good chance he will deliver.
“Let us think about the example that we are giving to the rest of Europe and the free world as well.

“All of us have made history and this is the greatest moment in the modern history of our great nation.”
Brexit supporters waved flags and sang ‘Rule Britannia’ and ‘God Save the Queen’.
Earlier anti-Brexit activists gathered outside the European Commission’s London headquarters for a vigil.
Boris Johnson released a video to mark Brexit.
In it he asserted: “When I look at the potential of this country waiting to be unleashed, I know that we can turn this opportunity into a stunning success.
“We have obeyed the people.
“We have taken back the tools of self-government.
“Now is the time to use those tools to unleash the full potential of this brilliant country and to make better the lives of everyone in every corner of our United Kingdom.”
To celebrate Brexit a number of Government buildings were lit up in red, white and blue.
Millions of commemorative fifty pence coins are also due to be released.
