Brexit BOOST: How Nigel Farage shut down ‘UTTER RUBBISH’ claims about trade with EU

Now leader of The Brexit Party, which is leading the polls in the European Parliament elections, Mr Farage was Ukip leader at the time. In footage filmed by Express.co.uk, he praised former Labour MP Chuka Umunna for a “sensible conversation” about the EU, while calling out Project Fear which was being perpetuated by the Government of the time. David Cameron, Prime Minister in 2016, and George Osborne, his Chancellor of the Exchequer, were known for their pessimistic forecasting of the British economy post-Brexit.

Both campaigning for Remain, these scare tactics were used in an attempt to persuade people to vote to stay in the EU.

Just weeks before the Express EU Debate, Mr Osborne claimed the UK would go into a “recession” if it left the bloc.

He declared: “This is what happens if Britain leaves: the economy shrinks, the value of the pound falls, inflation rises, unemployment rises, real wages are hit, so too are house prices, and as a result Government borrowing goes up.

“The central conclusions of today’s Treasury analysis are clear – a vote to leave will push our economy into a recession.”

Mr Farage hit back at these claims during the debate.

He said: “What Chuka said earlier was dead right. It’s very refreshing actually to hear someone on the Remain side saying ‘If we leave the EU, of course, we’ll go on trading, it just depends on the terms.

“And to hear that, which is a sensible conversation on which we can have a debate, compared with the utter rubbish from George Osborne and the Prime Minister that the sky would fall in and no one’s going to want to trade with us…”

He went on to point out that originally when the UK joined the common market it was “economically the right thing to do”, but that now it is part of a single market.

The former Ukip leader argued the single market is “effectively the centre point of a political union”.

Now, Mr Farage leads the Brexit Party which looks set to secure over a third of the votes in the European Parliament elections tomorrow, according to the latest polls.

It is way ahead of Labour in second place on 16.8 percent, the Liberal Democrats on 16.3 percent and the Tories trailing behind on 10 percent.

If these polls are accurate, this would mark the lowest vote share for the Conservatives in a national election since the party’s inception in 1834.

This week however, Mr Farage came under attack when someone threw a milkshake over him while he was out campaigning in Newcastle.

Photographs emerged of Mr Farage in a suit drenched in the drink.

A man has since been arrested and charged with common assault and criminal damage, referring to the microphones the party leader was wearing.
