Brexit betrayal: Remainer Gauke forms ‘squad’ of rebel MPs to try and sabotage EU exit
Mr Johnson has insisted that the UK will leave on October 31 with or without a deal. However, thanks to a Remainer plot led by former Cabinet ministers David Gauke and Philip Hammond, that exit could now be under threat. According to The Daily Telegraph, the so-called “squad” of Tory rebels will meet next week in order to stop a no deal Brexit.
The group which also includes Greg Clark and Rory Stewart will discuss ways to stop Mr Johnson’s “do or die” pledge early next week.
A source from inside the pro-Remain group said: “There’s going to be a tactics meeting early next week now they’re all back from holiday.
“They know they’re only got a limited time frame so they’ve got to act quickly.”
The Remainer plot comes as 20 Tory MPs had sent a letter to the Prime Minister warning against his demand to Brussels to scrap the Irish backstop.
They claimed that Mr Johnson’s desire to remove the backstop had “set the bar so high that there is no realistic probability of a deal being done”.
Moreover, there has been a separate sect of Conservative MPs who have proposed the idea of an interim Government to take over from Mr Johnson.
Dominic Grieve and Sir Oliver Letwin have been labelled as the ring leaders behind the plot.
Both had agreed to meet with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn in order to discuss plans which would see him take power for an interim period.
In the wake of the apparent rebellion within the party, former Brexit minister David Jones said that party members would be “entirely justified” in deselecting MPs who conspired with Mr Corbyn.
Mr Jones added: “It is hard to believe that any Conservative Members of Parliament would willingly become useful idiots for an individual such as Jeremy Corbyn, an out-and-out Marxist whose sole aim is to acquire power by any means possible.”
Mr Gireve back-peddled on the speculation over his desire to have a Labour-led interim Government.
The Tory MP added: “I’m prepared to speak to any parliamentarian who shares that view, including the leader of the opposition.
“If he is against no deal, I’m happy to talk. That is very different to thinking he is an appropriate figure to lead a government.”
