The coastal caper in Deal, Kent, came as forecasters warned of wind and rain – with snow and ice in Scotland and maybe Northwest England – from today.

Claire Lorimer and son Theo, two, were already sledging yesterday, following a white-out in their Cairngorms village of Carrbridge.

Conditions are expected to be milder across the rest of the UK in the run-up to 2023, but Tom Morgan from the Met Office warned of “potentially disruptive” and much more unsettled conditions ahead.

He said: “We will see fairly frequent bands of heavy rain moving across the country.

“It is windy through the coming week, including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The rain will be particularly heavy in the West.”

And Mr Morgan warned travellers: “There may well be some pretty strong winds and the buffeting of high-sided vehicles.”

Meanwhile, Northern Scotland could see quite a lot of snow today, with the mercury at around 1C (33.8F).

New Year’s Eve revellers in the South could face 12C temperatures, but those in the North will have highs of just 8C.
