Brace for impact: London and South East on red alert for Storm Eunice

A red weather alert has been extended to cover London and the East of England.

Storm Eunice has landed as is battering the UK with powerful winds, with disruption to transport feared throughout the morning.

The rare red warning is the most severe the Met Office can issue.

It means a high impact is high likely and people should expect ‘significant disruption and dangerous conditions due to extremely strong winds’.

The warning was issued just before 4am and is in place from 10am until 3pm.

Millions are being urged to take extra precautions over fears flying debris could pose a risk to life.

The warning now covers Greater London, Kent, Surrey, Essex and East Sussex.

It is in place on top of an earlier weather red warning starting at 7am along the coastline of Devon, Cornwall and Somerset as well as the south coast of Wales.

Those travelling between England and Wales faced difficulties with the closing of the M48 Severn Bridge, while the alternative Prince of Wales bridge was expected to be closed about 6am.Storm Eunice is the second named weather event to hit the UK this week.

Rail travel was halted in parts of the country by Storm Dudley – but today’s is expected to be worse.

Forecasters have warned it could bring 100mph winds, with the Met Office previously predicting it could break a 30-year-old record for strongest gusts.

All trains in Wales have been cancelled already and other major rail firms have urged people not to travel all today.

The Met Office also took the unusual step of issuing a severe weather alert with National Highways for strong winds covering the whole of the country’s strategic road network from 6am to 6pm.

National Highways said high-sided vehicles and other ‘vulnerable’ vehicles such as caravans and motorbikes could be blown over so should avoid bridges and viaducts.
