A six-year-old boy is planning to walk 30 miles in an RAF uniform to raise money for charity.

Jacob Newson is supporting the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund by walking from RAF Manston in Ramsgate to the Battle of Britain Memorial in Folkestone, Kent.

Jacob, from Leeds, will start his challenge on 30 October and end it with his father Andy on Halloween.

October 31 marks his seventh birthday and the day the Battle of Britain ended 80 years ago.

So far, Jacob has raised more than £17,000 for Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund.

Last year, he climbed Pen-y-ghent in Yorkshire to raise cash for the same organisation.

Andy Newson said: “After Jacob climbed the mountain last year he got invited to some RAF bases as a thanks and he loved it so much he wanted to do another fundraiser.

“He knows he’s raised a lot of money but at six years old he doesn’t know the value or context of the almost £25,000 he’s raised since last year.”

The duo were originally planning to take on the challenge in Europe, from Belgium to Dunkirk in northern France.

But after the COVID-19 outbreak, Mr Newson, an advanced emergency medical technician with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, came up with the idea to do the challenge in Britain instead.

He added: “Only COVID-19 restrictions will stop it now so it’s down to whether West Yorkshire or Kent goes to level three.”
