Boy, 3, dies after falling into a canal with his mum in Newbury, Berkshire, police say

A three-year-old boy has died after falling into a canal with his mum, police say.

Officers were called to Ash Bridge in Newbury, Berkshire on Saturday after reports that a woman and a child had fallen into the water nearby.

A statement from Thames Valley Police (West Berkshire) said: “Both the woman and child were recovered from the water and taken to hospital.

“Tragically, the child later died in hospital.”

The force said the mother had been treated in hospital but was later discharged, and that specially trained officers were supporting the family.

The death is being treated as “unexplained but not suspicious” and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

The police statement added: “Our thoughts are with the child’s family at this incredibly difficult time.”

Police were joined by firefighters and paramedics in their efforts to free the pair from the water – a part of the Kennet & Avon Canal.
