The Russian government has denied it is planning a military attack but has not denied the movements. Trains have been spotted also carrying tanks and rocket artillery launchers across Russia.

Ukraine yesterday stepped up calls for the country to be allowed to join Nato.

In a phone call yesterday with Jens Stoltenberg, Nato Secretary General, Mr Zelensky said: “Nato is the only way to end the war in Donbass.”

Russian-supported separatists continue to fight a war against the Kiev government in the war-torn region of Ukraine.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said those living in eastern Ukraine would not accept Nato membership.

He said: “So far we’re not seeing an intention by the Ukrainian side to somehow calm down and move away from belligerent topics.”
