New footage shows the prime minister shake hands with Brazil’s health minister shortly before he was diagnosed with coronavirus.

Boris Johnson, 57, reportedly came into contact with Marcelo Queiroga, 55, while in New York City for the United Nations General Assembly.

Shortly after, the Tory leader headed to the White House to meet Joe Biden, 78, in the hope of securing a free trade deal.

US President Biden stayed at the same hotel as Mr Queiroga, who was confirmed to have the virus on Tuesday evening.

The South American politician said he had worn a mask while inside the UN building – despite many other officials failing to follow suit.

The rest of his party will be forced to leave the US without him as he quarantines in New York for 14 days.

Mr Queiroga has had the Chinese-made CoronaVac vaccine but has not shared when exactly he was jabbed.

A statement given to CNN said he was ‘doing well’ after being infected. Other members of the Brazilian delegation have tested negative.

Mr Johnson is fully vaccinated after revealing doctors prepared to announce his death as he suffered from Covid last year.

Brazilian journalist Raquel Krähenbühl released the footage of the pair on Twitter, saying: ‘He [Mr Queiroga] went to the UN today to watch President Bolsonaro’s speech. Here, he shakes hands with Prime Minister Boris Jonhson- who met Biden today at the White House.’

A spokesman for the UN secretary-general has said ‘a contact tracing protocol is in place in case of cases arising’ at the UN headquarters. He declined to comment further.

Also at the gathering was Brazil President Jair Bolsonaro, who shared an awkward exchange with Mr Johnson this week.

Mr Bolsonaro was told to get jabbed by the PM after previously spreading disinformation – including bizarre claims that the vaccines could turn people into crocodiles.

He said last week he would not get the vaccine as he ‘had natural immunity’ from catching it.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Downing Street for comment.
