Boris says Captain Tom 'inspired whole nation' as NHS hero battles Covid
The prime minister and numerous politicians have sent their well wishes to Captain Sir Tom Moore as he battles coronavirus and pneumonia in hospital.
The family of the Second World War veteran, who raised almost £33 million for the NHS during the first lockdown, announced he had been taken to hospital on Sunday after needing further assistance with his breathing.
Daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore said her dad is currently being looked after by ‘wonderful staff’ at Bedford Hospital – but is not in intensive care.
Following the announcement, the prime minister, fellow politicians and celebrities wished the centenarian a full recovery, hailing him an ‘inspiration’ for his efforts during the pandemic.
Boris Johnson tweeted: ‘My thoughts are very much with @CaptainTomMoore and his family. You’ve inspired the whole nation, and I know we are all wishing you a full recovery.’
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer wrote on Twitter: ‘The whole nation hopes you get well soon @captaintommoore. You’ve been an inspiration to us all throughout this crisis.’
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan tweeted: ‘Thank you to our brilliant NHS for taking care of @captaintommoore.
Captain Tom won the hearts of the nation after vowing to walk 100 laps around his Bedfordshire garden before his 100th birthday in honour of the NHS during Britain’s first lockdown last year.
Setting out to raise just £1,000 for NHS charities, the grandfather soon smashed the record after millions of donations flooded in from around the world.
He was knighted by the Queen for his efforts at Windsor Castle last summer, after being hailed an inspiration for his efforts during the pandemic.
